Sculptra vs Other Dermal Fillers: Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary rejuvenation treatments designed to add volume to the skin. Sculptra is different from hyaluronic acid fillers because it helps treat an underlying cause of facial volume loss and the reduction of collagen. Collagen acts as the skin’s support structure and helps maintain the skin’s shape. As we age, we lose collagen, and the skin’s inner structure is weakened, reducing its ability to maintain elasticity and moisture, and giving the face a sagging, wrinkled, hollowed, or tired appearance. Sculptra works deep within the skin’s surface and is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body to help stimulate collagen production, reinforcing the skin’s inner structure to provide a natural-looking, more youthful result. Think of Sculptra as your long term anti-aging solution!
Sculptra FAQ
Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). This synthetic material is a biocompatible, biodegradable substance which has been used in medical products, including dissolvable sutures, for more than 30 years. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a collagen stimulator that is injected into the dermis to help restore the deep, underlying structure of the skin. As the PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin gradually, replacing your skin’s inner structure and volume over time, helping to restore volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds.
Sculptra can be used to treat the cheeks, temples, jawline, nasolabial folds, periocular region, and chin to address volume loss and to improve skin quality and minimize wrinkles. Sculptra can also be used on the body to add volume and improve skin texture by rejuvenating, smoothing, and filling areas like the buttocks, thighs, décolletage, and neck.
Prior to treatment, you will have a consultation with your injector to discuss your goals, expectations, and determine which dermal filler products will be right for you. Sculptra injections are done in-office and take less than an hour. When you arrive for your appointment, photos will be taken and a topical numbing cream will be applied. The actual injections typically take just a few minutes. Sculptra is mixed with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during and after treatment, and the topical numbing agent can make the treatment more comfortable. Your injector will slowly inject the Sculptra product to the specific areas of the face using a microcannula.
Immediately after your treatment you will notice plumping in the area where the injections took place, this is just a combination of the water mixed with the poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and swelling. This effect will subside within a few days as the product begins to integrate. You may experience slight redness, tenderness, and bruising, as with any injectable treatment; this typically only lasts for a few days depending on how you heal. Minimize bruising and swelling by avoiding heat, strenuous exercise, and alcohol for 48 hours. Ageless also has products available for purchase to minimize common side effects.
Results appear gradually over a few months and are long-lasting, more than two years. Since the aging process continues, we recommend maintaining your results with additional treatments as needed.
Typically, up to three treatment sessions are needed over a few months. The treatments are scheduled at four to six weeks apart as your body gradually develops new collagen fibers. Studies have shown patients who have received Sculptra injections still have more collagen after three years after their procedure as compared to the average of their age group. This speaks to the longevity of Sculptra treatments and the benefit of building your new collagen within the skin. Your collagen is yours! Once you have achieved optimal overall correction, maintenance treatments can be done every two to five years or as needed to continue replenishing your collagen.
During clinical trials, the most common side effects after initial treatment include injection site swelling, tenderness, redness, pain, bruising, bleeding, itching and lumps. Serious complications with Sculptra are rare and can be avoided by receiving treatment in a reputable aesthetics practice with experienced injectors, such as Ageless. You should avoid Sculptra products if have previously had an allergic reaction to any ingredient of the product or have a history of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring. Safety has not been established in patients who are pregnant, lactating, breastfeeding, or under 18 years of age.
